So, during the winter, and over the past few weeks, we’ve been talking to some of our readers about hair care and maintenance and how important it is for gray or silver hair, especially. And we started to wonder:
What would happen if all of our readers did one thing to take extraordinary care of their hair?
Something to think about, huh?
Here is how it works:
Between May 1 through July 30 we are challenging you to do one thing to take better care of your gray or silver hair. Just one thing. And what a great time to start! The sun is getting stronger; the weather is getting warmer, and soon enough, the harshness of summer will be upon us.
Ready for the challenge? Here are a 11 ideas to get you started:
Apply a hair glaze on a monthly basis. A good hair glaze can do wonders to boost hair shine and is great for hair cuticles.
Get a good haircut or trim. Is it time to get rid of that last bit of color or just clean up your ends? A great cut or trim can reduce split ends and keep your hair looking vibrant and healthy.
Try a new conditioner. Experiment with a new conditioner or try making one from scratch and add in a few natural ingredients. Here’s a great home recipe we found that combines lavender, coconut and argan oil.
Purchase a protective hat. Your skin isn’t the only thing that needs protection from the sun. Your hair also needs to be protected from UVA and UVB rays that can damage hair cuticles. Protection is especially important for gray or graying hair.
Protect your hair from chlorine. Many of us will spend most of the next several months at the pool. If you’ll be doing a lot of swimming this summer, plan around the chlorine by regularly wearing a swim cap or investing in a few hair care products that protect the hair from chlorine. The key is to use these products regularly.
Try a new up-do. There’s nothing classier than a great up-do, and it’s a great way to protect your hair from the scorching sun. Here are a few Pinterest boards that show some very classy up-dos:
Natural Up-Dos (for naturalistas)
Drink more water. There are many benefits associated with drinking more water, one of them being healthier hair. Drinking more water might also help with hair thinning and dandruff.
Eat well. Healthy hair is an inside-out job. Start taking better care of your hair by focusing on nutrition. The Paleo eating plan is a great way to get the protein you need, given that you are not vegetarian or a vegan. For everyone, getting proper amounts of omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, as well as Vitamin D is important. Eating well is critical for healthy hair.
Switch your hair salon or stylist. This might be one of the best things you’ll ever do to take care of your gray or silver hair, especially if your current salon or stylist is not gray and silver hair-friendly.
Ditch the dye. Haven’t gone gray or silver yet? Ditching the dye is the first step, and it is a great way to take better care of your hair. So if you’ve decided to transition, you’ve stepped up to the challenge!
Reduce the stress about your strands. Having a great perspective (even about temporary skunk hair) will improve your outlook, emotional well-being, and health. Yeah, friends might treat you differently or you might think you’ll look “old”, but can you challenge yourself to think about this life change in a totally different way?
Will you take us up on the challenge? What is one thing you can do to take extraordinary care of your hair?
