The sight of the new season fashion collections is enough to shake off the winter blues and cheer our hearts! The spring collections traditionally tend to be packed with color and pizzazz for the new season, reminding us of lighter, brighter days and the summer fun ahead. It’s also a chance to get out of neutrals and blacks and experiment with new colors and lighter textures, to create a fresh new you!
The good news for lovers of crimson, scarlet, ruby and pillar-box reds is that the gorgeous rouge is this year’s official color… and it’s everywhere. From red denim jeans through to red chiffon dresses and scarlet ladies shoes, this classic color of passion will be all over the high street this year, in a wonderful range of shades, tones, textures and finishes.
Teamed with Nude
Don’t worry if you’re not quite ready to embrace full on red. You can wean yourself back into color by teaming it with nude shades and this look was the one that dominated the catwalks this year. Try a nude skirt with a simple red vest or combine a tan leather jacket with a pair of red jeans; these are a particular trend for 2012, to provide a punchier finish than the classic greys, blues and blacks.
Don’t Forget Accessories
Red also works brilliantly well for accessories, which is ideal if you’ve managed to create the ultimate neutral capsule wardrobe, or are on a tight budget and attempting to avoid refurnishing your entire wardrobe this year! Try red beads, shades or a large glass cocktail ring in a smoky ruby shade. Red leather shoes are gorgeous, as are red suede deck shoes and flats, or have fun with a large poppy colored handbag. Don’t forget make-up either. Red lips are a classic choice and look as good paired with a LBD as they do teamed with Capri pants and a Breton top. You can either wear your red lips matte and chic (try a neutral lip liner to avoid too structured a finish) or a red gloss with a little sparkle; this is great as a more natural and easier way to wear the shade. Just remember that bright red lips need balancing. Opt for a clean base, a light dusting of powder, a slick of French styled eyeliner and a few coats of curling mascara.
Which Shade of Red?
One of the things that newbies to red ask is what shade they should wear. The trick is to test out different shades in natural light and see which brings out your natural skin tone and makes you look alive. The right red will make you ‘pop’ with life. As a general rule, cool skin tone colors suit ‘bluey-reds’ and warmer tones suit ‘bronzy-reds’. If you’re unsure, a classic poppy red suits everyone. Although this shade looks terrific with a natural tan, it can also look extremely striking with pale natural skin and beautiful dark skin. Just avoid combining obviously fake tan with ruby red lips; it looks a little too OTT for this season!
