The Eyes Have It: Eye Makeup to Match Gray Hair

0

You’ve heard it before: The eyes are the windows to the soul.

Going gray is a perfect excuse to experiment with new makeup.  As long as the frame of your face is getting a new look, why not spruce up the windows too?

In terms of eye shadows, most makeup artists recommend avoiding pale pastels, nude tones and deep browns, as they may wash out your face more.  Instead, reach for soft purples, blues or grays.

Silver, gray and navy are also popular recommendations for eyeliner.  The one no-no experts seem to agree on?  Stay away from hard black eyeliner.  The contrast against your gray hair will most likely be too overwhelming and actually age you.

Similarly, it’s natural for your eyebrows to go gray later than the hair on your head.  But making them pure black if you’re more than halfway through the process of going gray may be too harsh.  One shade darker than your hair is a good general rule to go by.

Of course, there are more individual factors to consider.  Perhaps you enjoy mixing colors when applying eye shadow.  Maybe your eye shape calls for certain techniques as well.  Natural eye color itself is also something to think about.

But that’s the beauty of makeup.  Unlike hair dye, you can change it up as often as you like.  Don’t be afraid to experiment, have fun and let us know how it goes!
