Simple Steps To Care for Your Gray Hair

by jbissot on September 21, 2010

As you go gray, often you will experience texture and condition changes which you are unaccustomed to pre-gray.  So, taking a little extra time to give your luscious silver locks some love is essential in caring for and maintaining your new hue.

1. Choose the right cleanser.  There are so many products out there to choose from, so talk to your stylist and try out a few.  You want to use something mild, that will also help keep brassy tones at bay.  (Watch for our latest list of shampoos and conditioners coming soon!)

2.  Deep conditioning is a must.  Again, speak with your stylist about products you can use both at the salon and at home to maintain the rich, soft texture you’re hoping to maintain.

Want results out of a jar?  Try the super luxurious Carol’s Daughter Tui Hair Smoothie.  This product is “an intense conditioning treatment for normal to dry hair made from a super-rich emulsion of shea butter, cocoa butter, and jojoba oil. Calming chamomile aids in taming of frizzy, unmanageable hair, while the fragrant Tui blend of guava, mango, and passion fruit tantalize the senses.” Available from Sephora

There are also quite a few home remedies out there as well, just discuss with your stylist first.  We found this Avocado Deep Conditioning Treatment at Longlocks.com:

“Ingredients:

  • 1 small jar of mayonaise
  • 1 avocado

Directions:Peel avocado and remove pit. Mix all ingredients in a medium-sized bowl with your hands until it’s a consistent green color. Smooth into hair being careful to work it to the ends. Use shower cap or plastic wrap to seal body heat in. Leave on hair for 20 minutes. For deeper conditioning wrap a hot, damp towel around your head over the plastic, or use a hair dryer set to a low to medium heat setting.”
