Going Gray with Gaynor

Hi, was so excited to find other ladies out there who want to let the grey just happen, like me.  It has been hard the initial first months, the comments and pressure to colour. I have stuck with  it and now almost 8 months since I started, I am feeling confident to see it through. The initial halo of grey was the worst, and on photos I noticed it looked like I had a skull cap on!  Now I have 6 or so inches of natural hair and I like it! Just getting past those first few inches is the worst part, but don’t give up ladies it is worth it, and you will feel better about the true, more natural you.

Yay, another going grey lady from England! Isn’t it wonderful when you give up the dye and go natural? I went a slightly different route to you in that I got all the dye chopped off, so I’m now growing out what was a really short crop. It’s getting towards shoulder length now.

The thing I’ve noticed the most is the improvement in the condition of my hair. It used to be so dry and coarse with the dye, but now it’s like totally new hair (which I suppose is what it is lol) – I can’t believe the difference!

Love the pic – you are gorgeous.

Hiya Debs,
Thanks for your comment. Pity we can,t find this kind of support from our own countrymen eh! This site is great innit? lol
You are so right about the natural hair coming through being of better quality, I can’t wait till I can chop the last bit of colour out.
Why I coloured for so long I don’t know, it ruins the hair, makes it brittle and fizzy. I thought the grey at first was coarse, but its actually softer now that I have a lot more of it. I’m lookin forward to being totally grey.
You must be a bit of a looker yourself to have cut your hair right down to the bone! I really could not do that as I am actually quite, quite plain. So short hair makes me look like a man, as I never wear make up either. I know this as I tried it once. lol
Thanks again for the comment (thought no one had read it!)

This is my second month of not coloring my hair. I know it’s going to be a long haul but I’m ready. I have only about 2″ of white so far but I love my new color. It’s taking a lot of courage on my end since my husband hardly has any grey and he is 4 years older than me.

Hi Gaynor, your hair looks a lot like mine — the same dyed color and the same amount of gray that has grown in so far. Have you (or has anyone) noticed that the hair gets thicker as the gray comes in? My hair started thinning a year or two after I started having it colored, and I wonder if the dye had anything to do with it. I’ve asked several hairdressers, and they all claim that the color makes it LOOK thicker, but they won’t admit that it even MIGHT be the cause of the thinning.

Thank you for posting, and congratulations on going natural !

Hi Riley
I have not experienced hair loss when it was coloured, but at the moment it seems to be coming out by the handful every time I shampoo! ! !
The photo was taken last July and now I only have a tiny bit of colour at the ends, I did send in the latest pic but its not been used.
Thanks for your comment and I hope my hair soon thickens up again!

Hi Gaynor,
You probably know this, but just in case you don’t — an underactive thyroid (Hypothyroid) can cause hair loss (and weight gain and other things). A blood test can diagnose it and the treatment is just a daily pill such as Synthroid, which isn’t too expensive. I’ve been taking it for years.
Good luck with your hair !
