Happy Birthday Going Gray!

by going gray on January 12, 2009

Going Gray is one year old this month.  I thought I would republish this post (our first one) and get your thoughts on what would like to discuss this year.  This is your blog!  Guest bloggers are welcome!

Just what is it about gray hair…
Originally uploaded by iSeL Knits…that makes some people think they have a right to annoy others with their preconceived ideas about beauty and age and all that other crap that I have no interest in listening to? I cannot get a haircut without getting the usual half-joking (they don’t even have the cojones/ovarios to be honest) comment or lengthy diatribe about how I am “too young” to have all this gray hair exposed. It sort of offends them. And it’s not even that they want my money, because they go as far as to tell me that I could “take care of the problem” myself. REALLY? Been there; done that. Now, could you please respect my freedom to do whatever I want with my f’ing hair? Thank you.

I love your hair. It’s weird that people have opinions about this very natural thing that happens. I personally find over processesed hair annoying–yours is shiny and healthy.

omg…..Right on. I have been thinking seriously about growing my natural hair out. I am already anticipating all the comments. Most of them negative. I really wish that people would think for themselves instead of just copying everyone elses thoughts and ideas. It’s almost a knee jerk reaction in our society. i mentioned it to one very close male friend recently and without even pausing to think,he said, no don’t do it. You will no longer look as youthful as you do (I’m 48) and the clanger……”its different for men”. Grrrr…. I can’t wait for it to grow in! I mean, you can always dye it back, right? Its not like something you can’t undo. I’m not having a baby here, just growing the hair out!

I’m doing it too! Last dyed on Dec. first, age 58, five grandchildren, and ready to be a Hot Grey-haired Grandma! My plan is to gradually get trims every month or so and just let my hair do its thing. The roots are very obvious, but I call them my “halo.” Found a lovely young stylist who says things like “you’re going to LOVE it!” etc, and I’ll continue to enjoy her support. Love this site and reading the experiences of the other brave souls. It’s actually kind of a fun process so far… we’ll see as time goes on!

I decided to stop coloring my hair about a year ago. Am 64 and have been coloring for ages since started graying in my 30′s. I am proud of my gray hair…having earned every one of them raising 5 daughters. lol. Only hitch is that my husband (same age) dznt have one gray hair…..he will be bald before ever being gray. Just wish he looked a bit more like me…..gray-wise. Ah well…..sticking to my guns about the natural look. This is who I am..take it or leave it!

Wow – your hair looks amazing. I am growing my gray hair out and I'm hoping it'll look like this. It's very funky and "anime"…
