I stopped coloring my hair about a year ago and I would never do it again! This is what 54 looks like and I like it!
I have two teens and a wonderful husband who love my hair gray. My son doesn’t care if I even HAVE hair as long as I can still cook. Now – my daughter – different story. She asked me to keep coloring my hair when she started high school so I wouldn’t look like her grandmother. I did for her first two years but just got fed up with the way gray hair looks dyed. You can never get all the hairs at your temple covered it seems and after a couple of weeks, it turns a funny red color if you go with brown and fades terribly if you go with blonde. My 73 year old mother also colors her hair and keeps telling me
I look 10 years older without the dye. At this point, I just don’t care if that’s true or not. I love the gray and my husband loves it – what more matters?!
Even if I look older to some people – I don’t act it. I run with my three dogs, I knit, read a lot, love to dance, play several musical instruments and am learning Spanish. I live in an area where women don’t let their gray hair show so I can’t say I’m admired much but I have a group of women friends who have gone to moon hair and I make a point to stop women with gray hair to let them know they look great!
Ladies, keep it soft and shiny or funk it up! We look marvelous!

54 looks fit and fabulous!
YOU LOOK FANTASTIC!!!!! I don’t think you look older AT ALL – as a matter of fact, I think some women who color their hair look older than their years. The dye makes the face look harsher – and it plays up all the wrinkles. Having gray hair lightens up the entire face – guess I could call it a “moon” light??
To JoEllen Hamilton from Florence Hamilton:
I love the way your hair looks! I have just decided (I will be 54 in a few weeks) that I have had it with haircolor after 15-20 years of coloring my hair and am going “cold turkey” and letting my grey hair grow out–I am actually kind of relieved and also a little bit scared of what it will look like, but I am going for it!! What kind of shampoo or conditioner do you recommend–your hair looks soft and shiny! Thanks.
You have gorgeous, bright and shiny hair. My mother is giving me a hard time too, she still colours her hair dark brown and will insist I look years older with my silver hair but I’m not going back to the slavery of the roots for her or anyone.
Hey all! This is the only place I can find to reply to your questions about what kind of shampoo etc… I use.
I use different kinds – I just make sure they are either white or clear in color.
and I go easy on the conditioner!

I am also interested in going gray…..was it hard? How did you go about it?
Did your hairstylist put a temporary rinse on your hair while you were going gray?
I am now fully transitioned from dyed brown to natural silver and can highly recommend this website for information and support through the process:

I've always worn my hair short so it only took me a few months to go completely gray – not as painful as someone with longer hair, I'm sure!
Hi JoEllen! Would love to get a recent picture of you and your beautiful gray hair!!
